Do I Need a Doula if I Want an Epidural?

Short answer: a doula is helpful whether or not you get an epidural. Here is why.

THE SHORT ANSWER

  • Doulas support every kind of birth, medicated or unmedicated.
  • Labor often lasts hours before and after an epidural.
  • A doula helps with positioning, rest, pushing, and the first hours with your baby.

This page is general information, not medical advice. Always talk with your doctor or midwife about your own care.

Before the epidural

Most people labor for a while before getting an epidural. A doula helps you stay comfortable at home and early at the hospital, and helps you decide when you want it.

After the epidural

  • Position changes in bed to help labor progress
  • Rest, since an epidural is often a chance to sleep
  • Pushing support and encouragement
  • Emotional support if anything changes

No judgment, ever

Wanting an epidural is a completely valid choice. My job is to support the birth you want, not to push any particular kind of birth.

Questions families ask

Will a doula try to talk me out of an epidural?
No. I support your choices, whatever they are.
What does a doula do once I have an epidural?
Help with positioning, rest, pushing, and the first feed, plus emotional support throughout.
Is a doula worth it if I am planning a hospital birth?
Yes. Many doula clients give birth in the hospital, and many get epidurals.
