They sound similar, but doulas and midwives play very different roles. Here is how they work together.

Midwives are trained medical providers. Certified nurse midwives often work in hospitals, including Kootenai Health in Coeur d'Alene, while licensed midwives often attend home births. A midwife provides prenatal checkups, monitors you and your baby in labor, catches your baby, and handles medical care afterward.
A doula never performs medical tasks, checks your cervix, or makes medical decisions.
Not necessarily, but they complement each other. Your midwife or OB focuses on the medical safety of you and your baby, and may be caring for other patients too. Your doula focuses on you and stays by your side the whole time. Families with an OB, a midwife, or a hospital birth team can all benefit from a doula.
