When Should You Hire a Doula?

The best time to book, what to ask in a consultation, and why it's never too late.

THE SHORT ANSWER

  • Many families book in the second trimester.
  • Booking early gives you more time for prenatal visits and planning.
  • It's never too late. Reach out even in your third trimester.

This page is general information, not medical advice. Always talk with your doctor or midwife about your own care.

Why the second trimester works well

By then, most families feel settled in their pregnancy and have time to meet a few doulas. Doulas take a limited number of clients each month, so booking early also secures your spot.

What to ask in a consultation

  • What is your training and experience?
  • What is included in your package?
  • How do you handle being on call, and do you have a backup doula?
  • How do you support partners?
  • How do you feel about epidurals, inductions, and cesareans?

Late in pregnancy?

Reach out anyway. I can often still fit in prenatal visits, or focus on labor and postpartum support.
